CAR FREE DAY AT RASUNA SAID

Jakarata, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - To incarnate a lower pollution environment, the environmental control agency (BPLHD) along with the local government of Jakarta, conducted its first car free day on Jl. Rasuna Said, Jakarta, Sunday.

Such event is usually held at Jakarta's busiest and main road, Thamrin-Sudirman every last weeks of the month. Police, Transportation department and BPLHD shuts the road for any personal vehicles, but not for public transportations. People from all around Jakarta can safely jog, walks, cycling, or doing any sports they desire at the main road. They usually bring along their families, friends and their loved ones to enjoy Jakarta's main road of the car free day.

Meanwhile in Rasuna Said, Kuningan, the main road of Southern Jakarta is closed for personal vehicles, but the main transportation like the regular buses and the Trans Jakarta buses who has it's own lane and public buses are operating in the area are allowed to go through. The event starts from 6 am and it will open later at 2 pm, the premier car free day was also opened by the Jakarta'a Governor, Fauzi Bowo at 7 am.

"Unlike Sudirman-Thamrin lane which closed monthly, the Rasuna Said's car free day would be a routine activity once every six months due the air measuring device turns. Unfortunately we only have one device for the province so we have to take turns with other locations," said South Jakarta BPLHD head, Jhoni Tagor, here, Sunday.

Joni admitted that the car free day socialization was not quite effective, because he still sees many drivers and motorbike riders complained about the road block. Previously, BPLHD had informed people about car free day, by giving away leaflets and banner since two weeks before, and he claimed that it was not very effective.

"Socialization is one of our obstacle, and we shall improvise this in the future, and media contribution can be very helpful in socializing this program," he said.

In the car free day opening, BPHLD provided 10 pairs of soccer goals posts, two of them was provided for public and eight was used for a mini open soccer tournament held by BPLHD for local residences, students, employees and public with the grand prize of one million rupiah for the winner, Rp.750 thousand for second place and, Rp.500 thousand for the third place. as many as 32 teams competing the tournament.

"We wish that the air quality in Jakarta is improves, and less pollution," said the BPLHD mini soccer tournament organizer , Sugiat.

He said that the tournament registration opened since last month, and attracted people especially youth to participate in the game. People's interest about the game was quite high, but we limited the teams due to participant overload. players seems enjoying the game and not worrying about loosing, they're here only for the sports and entertainment, and they know that.

However the road block was not optimally conducted, as seen many personal vehicles were passing the Rasuna Said Road from Menara Kuningan to Latuharhari Street, the end of the Rasuna Said. Jhoni Tagor exclaimed that the road block was leaked, but unfortunately the measuring device was located along that area, the Setia Budi Building, might defect the measuring result.
